“We are at the end of the school year, on the eve of International Children’s Day. We rejoice that in the Republic of Moldova, children live with their parents in peace and safety. We celebrate their successes and achievements. At the same time, children in our neighboring country, Ukraine, face daily harsh realities caused by an unjust war.
Together with my colleagues, I have registered the Declaration on the condemnation of the Russian Federation’s policy of genocide against Ukraine, carried out through forced displacement and deportation of Ukrainian children to the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine and to the territory of the Russian Federation, which will be adopted by the plenary of the Parliament today. The Republic of Moldova thus joins other parliaments that have adopted similar declarations, such as the European Parliament, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, France, Iceland, the USA, and Canada,” Doina Gherman said.
With this Declaration, the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova:
Declares that the denial of the existence of the Ukrainian nation, together with the cynical and inhumane policies applied by the Russian Federation towards the children of Ukraine, falls within the definition of genocide under Article II(e) of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide;
Confirms the readiness of the authorities of the Republic of Moldova to continue to provide possible humanitarian assistance and necessary aid to the inhabitants of Ukraine who are seeking refuge because of the war;
Reconfirms its commitment to ensuring access for Ukrainian refugee children to education in their mother tongue, to the Ukrainian cultural space, to the preservation of their national identity, and spiritual relations with Ukraine;
Appeals for unity, vigilance, and responsibility to all citizens of the Republic of Moldova who want peace and freedom for the children of Ukraine, Moldova, and the world.
