Transnistrian leader Vadim Krasnoselsky held a meeting with US Secretary of State for Eastern Europe Christopher Smith in Tiraspol.

The sides reaffirmed their commitment to the principles of maintaining peace and security in the region. They also discussed the importance of the 5+2 format, in which the USA is an observer.

Krasnoselsky emphasized the importance of the dialogue with the United States as an observer in the 5+2 format and reiterated Transnistria’s commitment to the principles of maintaining peace and security.

Christopher Smith assured that the USA stands for a peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict and supports any positive dialogues.

The sides also discussed the duties imposed by Moldova on January 1 this year for Transnistrian economic agents. Krasnoselsky said that enterprises from the left bank cannot benefit from the opportunities of the free trade zone with Europe, as they need to open accounts in Moldovan banks.

“Europe has opened a window of economic opportunities for us, but Moldova is boarding it up,” Vadim Krasnoselsky said.

On February 26, President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Dorin Recean met with Christopher Smith in Chisinau. They discussed security in Moldova and the country’s European path. The president reiterated the commitment to reforms and emphasized the importance of the US support for them. With prime minister Dorin Recean, Christopher Smith discussed government priorities, including justice reform and the fight against corruption.
