Popsoi: “Improving relations with the Russian Federation is possible only in the context of a fundamental change in the security situation in the region”

Relations between Moldova and Russia have reached their lowest point, and improvement is only possible with a fundamental change in the region’s security situation. Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi made these remarks during a radio interview.

“As long as Russia continues its aggression against Ukraine, killing innocent civilians and exerting pressure on the Republic of Moldova through energy blackmail, political interference, and informational manipulation, we cannot discuss normal relations,” Popsoi stated.

He emphasized Moldova’s openness to dialogue and stated, “We want good relations with everyone, but they must be based on mutual respect and the sovereignty and integrity of the Republic of Moldova. Our partners must treat us as an equal state and respect the wishes of our people.”

Popsoi highlighted the artificially created hardships faced by citizens on the left bank of the Dniester since the beginning of the year. He accused the Kremlin of refusing gas deliveries despite having contractual obligations and access to alternative routes.

“The goal is to destabilize Moldova economically and influence parliamentary elections to install a pro-Russian government that would serve Moscow’s interests. There are scenarios in which gas deliveries could resume under certain conditions, but also scenarios where they will not resume at all. In the latter case, we could conclude that the Russian Federation, in some sense, is abandoning the Transnistrian region. Its outcome wouldn’t surprise anyone, considering Ukraine’s treatment of Russians and Russian speakers in cities like Mariupol, Kharkiv, and Odesa, where constant alarms and missiles threaten their lives,” Popsoi added.
