Recean from Switzerland: Parliamentary elections could take place in September, and Moscow aims for a pro-Russian majority in Chisinau

Parliamentary elections could take place in September, Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean told AFP while attending the World Economic Forum in Davos. The Prime Minister stated that Russia might influence the election results to establish a pro-Kremlin regime in Chisinau.

According to Recean, Moscow aims to strengthen its military presence to pressure Ukraine from the Odesa region. Consequently, the Prime Minister reiterated the necessity of replacing Russian troops in the Transnistrian region with a United Nations civilian mission.

“Russia intends to consolidate its power and military presence to provoke Ukraine in the west and southwest, specifically in the Odesa region. (…) It is crucial to understand that this scenario is only plausible if we replace the current so-called peacekeeping mission, involving Russian troops, with a civilian peacekeeping mission led by the United Nations,” stated Dorin Recean, as quoted by Antena3.

It is not the first time Dorin Recean has spoken about the need to remove Russia’s 14th Army from Moldovan territory. Previously, President Maia Sandu also addressed this issue, emphasizing that the Transnistrian region could receive financial aid once the so-called Russian peacekeepers are replaced by EU or UN missions.
