Romania exported a record amount of gas to the Republic of Moldova in a single day: 20% of the national production

Romania delivered a record 5 million cubic meters of natural gas to the Republic of Moldova on Thursday, covering 20% of Romania’s national production. Authorities had previously contracted these gas supplies, storing part of them in Romania, reports economica.net.

Transgaz data from Thursday at 10:00 AM showed that Romania exported the most significant gas flows to Moldova. Gas entered Romania from Bulgaria at Negru Voda, with an estimated volume of 5.7 million cubic meters. Meanwhile, Romania exported 2.3 million cubic meters to Hungary via Arad-Csanadpalota and sent 5 million cubic meters to Moldova through the Iasi-Ungheni pipeline.

“This marks the largest volume of gas ever exported to Moldova. The pipeline’s daily capacity can handle even higher volumes, up to 6 million cubic meters,” states economica.net.

SA Moldovagaz confirmed that Moldova’s right bank has secured enough natural gas to cover the entire heating season from October 2024 to March 2025. Authorities purchased the main supply of 7,443,773 MWh (approximately 700.1 million cubic meters) through the SRL “Bursa Romana de marfuri (Romanian Commodities Exchange) Est” trading platform.

However, Gazprom stopped gas deliveries to Moldova’s left bank on January 1, citing unpaid debts of $709 million—an amount Chisinau did not confirm, writes IPN.

Moldovan leaders accused the Kremlin of using energy blackmail. In response, the Ministry of Energy highlighted several viable alternative solutions for Tiraspoltransgaz to acquire natural gas.
