The Customs Service: What Moldovans need to know if they want to send unaccompanied goods abroad

Before the Easter holidays, the Customs Service reminds citizens about the rules for transporting parcels and unaccompanied luggage. Officials emphasize that individuals must declare all parcels sent between private persons, including those from the diaspora. This requirement helps prevent unpleasant situations and ensures smoother traffic flow at customs checkpoints.

The customs officials consider goods declared if individuals present them at the border and their value is under €150 for imports or €1,000 for exports. These provisions apply to all individuals, regardless of whether they are residents or non-residents. The Customs Service defines parcels sent from one individual to another (including those from the diaspora) as goods sent by the owner or on their behalf and transported by a third party (a carrier) without the owner’s presence during the border crossing. The sender must provide a supporting document or a valid transport contract with these shipments.

When individuals or carriers bring these goods into Moldova, they must declare them and pay import duties according to the general taxation regime. Goods sent from the diaspora must not serve commercial or production purposes.

The customs officials also note that customs control for such shipments must take place only in the presence of the owner’s legal representative, who must present a document proving their right of representation. The person must be an adult with full legal rights and valid proof to claim the parcel.

Authorities prohibit sending forbidden items in parcels from the diaspora, such as weapons and ammunition, explosives, flammable materials, drugs and psychotropic substances, radioactive or toxic products, and other objects whose circulation is restricted or banned. They also prohibit the transport of currency in such shipments.

The Customs Service of the Republic of Moldova urges citizens to follow current legislation and properly declare transported goods to ensure effective, safe, and transparent customs control.
