The National Bank of Moldova (NBM) held an award ceremony on Thursday, January 23, to announce the winners of the design contest ”The Symbol of the Moldovan Leu,” a project aimed at promoting the national currency and strengthening its visual identity.
”The National Bank of Moldova reaffirms its commitment to supporting initiatives that foster creativity, national identity, and community involvement, especially among the younger generation, in the visual elements development for the national currency,” stated NBM Governor Anca Dragu during the event’s opening.
The central bank’s leader congratulated the participants for their dedication and innovation, emphasizing the importance of a distinctive symbol for the Moldovan Leu.
”With this contest, we wanted to provide a platform for artists and young designers to contribute to creating a symbol for the Moldovan Leu. This project reflects not only the individual talent of the participants but also their commitment to cultural heritage and national identity,” added Governor Dragu.
During the event, Anca Dragu presented awards to the three contest winners: Ilia Nichitov, Dmitri Volosin, and Sergiu Porombac, who received commemorative silver coins titled “The Country Brand: Tree of Life.”
Additionally, other participants were recognized with certificates of appreciation for their valuable contributions, acknowledging the artistic effort and talent showcased in the competition.

The event featured a presentation titled “From Concept to Symbol: The Design Process for the National Currency and Commemorative Coins,” delivered by Corneliu Cretu, Head of the Cash Operations Division at NBM. Attendees gained insights into the stages of coin design, selection criteria, and the significance of symbols in strengthening national identity.
Guests were invited to a guided tour of the exhibition hall at the National Bank of Moldova, where they explored the collection of commemorative and jubilee coins issued by the NBM. This journey into Moldova’s monetary history provided a comprehensive perspective on the evolution and significance of the national currency.
The ”Symbol of the Moldovan Leu” contest ran from November 29, 2023, to October 31, 2024, and was open to professionals and students in graphic design, fine arts, and related fields. The competition offered young designers an opportunity to express their vision for the Moldovan Leu symbol, demonstrating conceptual and visual unity.
The winners were selected by a committee composed of representatives from the National Bank and independent experts through a secret voting process, ensuring the anonymity of the participants throughout the evaluation.
