The approach to women’s role in building peace and strengthening security is constantly changing, and it is increasingly clear that their contribution and ensuring gender equality in this area is essential to creating a more peaceful and secure world. In the context of Moldova’s commitment to the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on “Women, Peace, and Security” implementation, the Ministry of Internal Affairs organized an event to review the progress of the National Programme for the Resolution implementation.
“Following today’s forum, we aim to boost the implementation of the national program, to move forward with the modernization agenda, and to manage to combine training and capacity building with the necessary equipment to carry out the tasks of the service depending on the mandates that the Ministry of Internal Affairs manages,” said Daniela Misail-Nichitin, State Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Moldova.
“I welcome such discussions and especially the empowerment of women and the promotion of the gender equality dimension in all its aspects, including in security. It is important now to be more united than ever and to show solidarity. The Republic of Moldova has demonstrated that it can successfully face crises, energy, humanitarian, and security crises, with many strong and courageous women in key positions”, says Doina Gherman, Vice-President of the Moldovan Parliament.
Sweden is a reliable partner of Moldova and supports the promotion of gender equality and women’s rights through political dialogue, cooperation, and development programs, with a focus on training and exchange of best practices in various fields, including security and peace.
“We need to build a sustainable society that includes everyone, including women. It is as much about a rights issue, equal human rights, as it is about economic issues. We need to be sure that all people contribute to the development of our countries. We can only achieve it if we contribute, work, and develop our full potential. That is why it is so important to work for gender equality,” said Katarina Fried, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden in Chisinau.

Law enforcement representatives at the event stressed and acknowledged the need for a balanced and inclusive approach to ensuring security and peace in daily work.
“I would like to point out that we have appointed women to leadership positions in our latest adjustments to our functional structures. By shifting the concentration of power, we achieved good results. A lady can also may well trained in intervention, defense, and self-defense tactics”, said Viorel Cernauteanu, Chief of the General Police Inspectorate.
“With the support of UN Women, we have managed to set up a space for children. My colleagues, 146 in number from the National Public Security, when involved in certain missions, inspectors can leave their children in the nursery, where they are supervised and engaged in different activities. As a parent and a father, knowing that my child is nearby and receiving full attention reassures me, allowing me to continue my work and bring benefits to society,” concluded Pavel Apostol, Acting Head of the Patrol Police Directorate of the National Public Security Inspectorate.
The event organized by the Ministry of Internal Affairs aimed to strengthen collaboration between the Secretariat for the National Action Plan (NAP) implementation, national institutions, development partners, and civil society, thus demonstrating a strong commitment to promoting gender equality in security and peace.
