Ukrainian Ambassador to Moldova Marko Shevchenko was confused by statistics about the number of Ukrainian male citizens of recruitment age fleeing our country. The Ukrainian and our authorities are discussing the return of individuals once they get refused asylum. He made several statements on the program “A New Week with Anatoly Golya” on the TV8 channel on Monday, July 22.
“There are some questions that I likewise cannot get answers to. For example, there are about 100 people who, according to the data of the Border Police of the Republic of Moldova, illegally crossed the state border. These 100 people have applied for asylum, which places them under the protection of the International Asylum Convention. The Moldovan authorities only offer asylum to 90. Where are the other 10? Have they been detained? Have they returned home? No. They stay in Moldova, or they go further abroad,” the ambassador explained.
The diplomat stated that current legislation on refugee issues in Europe and Moldova does not adapt to the war situation. Established procedures did not anticipate a large-scale war in 21st-century Europe and the resulting flight of recruits.
