Viorel Cernauteanu: The documentation of the 140,000 people who succumbed to electoral corruption is just beginning

Viorel Cernauteanu, head of the General Inspectorate of Police, announced on Teleradio-Moldova that authorities have opened more than 80 criminal cases related to electoral corruption, IPN reports.

“Recently, we accelerated the documentation process. Based on press releases from the prosecutor’s office, cases are being sent to court daily,” Cernauteanu stated.

Regarding passive corruption—accepting money to support a particular candidate—authorities plan to document about 140,000 people under the Contravention Code, with fines reaching up to 37,000 lei.

“We have completed the detailed analysis of the 140,000 individuals who allowed themselves to be corrupted and influenced during this process. Soon, we will begin examining and documenting these cases. However, this doesn’t mean everyone will face sanctions. Many individuals are cooperating,” Cernauteanu explained.

He emphasized the need to improve legislation to support law enforcement efforts.
“The criminal organization Shor has used at least five or six different financing schemes in the past year alone. Lawmakers must update legal norms to provide law enforcement with the tools to address these issues effectively,” Cernauteanu noted.
