The Republic of Moldova has carried out important reforms on the path to European integration and has successfully managed several crises in recent years. It still has a long way to go. The European Union will continue to support your country and expects quick action from the Chisinau authorities to unlock a new tranche of previously agreed macro-financial assistance. This was stated in Chisinau by the European Commissioner for Economic Affairs, Paolo Gentiloni, at a press conference held with Prime Minister Dorin Recean.
Paolo Gentiloni said that several EU recommendations have already been implemented by our country. But others require additional effort. The EU expects swift action to meet political commitments.
“We had a good conversation about the economic situation, the steps regarding EU support, and the relationship between the EU and the Republic of Moldova. We know that in recent years Moldova has faced a huge challenge: a pandemic, an energy crisis, the impact of war, and hybrid threats. I want to acknowledge that these efforts have been parallel to ambitious reforms. The terms that we agreed on together will further strengthen the country’s energy security, improve the business environment, and support the fight against corruption.
The discussed actions regarding macro-financial assistance represent an important aspect of the preparatory process for the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the EU. They are in line with the nine recommendations presented by the European Commission. Some of these recommendations have already been implemented others still require further efforts. We look forward to swift action to meet these political commitments and macro-financial assistance. I am sure that all this will be done. It will allow us to pay the second part of the 145 million euros that should have been allocated in two installments before the end of this year. The European Commission will continue to support you,” Gentiloni stressed.
Prime Minister Dorin Recean, in turn, said that he had discussed with the European official the macro-financial assistance provided to Moldova and the progress made by our country in fulfilling the conditions established in relations with the EU.
European Commissioner for Economic Affairs Paolo Gentiloni is visiting Chisinau on 6-7 July. The European official scheduled meetings with several officials, including Head of State Maia Sandu and Parliament speaker Igor Grosu.
