The Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development, Vladimir Bolea, shared details on Tuesday evening, January 14, during the “Punctul pe Azi” show on TVR Moldova about the plans to construct nine bridges over the Prut River. The project includes significant infrastructure for better connecting the Republic of Moldova with Romania and other European Union countries.
The minister emphasized that the most advanced of these bridges is the “Union Bridge” in Ungheni, a symbolic structure for Romanians on both sides of the Prut.
“The most advanced bridge among all these is, of course, the Union Bridge in Ungheni. It is symbolic for Romanians on both sides of the Prut because, in 1991, it all began there with the Flower Bridge. I discussed with my colleagues from the Ministry of Infrastructure that it would be fitting to name the Union Bridge, as it already has its designation. We should also collaborate with architects to design its platform with symbolic elements of national heritage, such as traditional Romanian carpets. This bridge should incorporate ethno-folkloric components from all geographical regions of Romania, creating a cohesive representation of Romanians everywhere through this structure,” the official stated.
He mentioned that the project for the “Union Bridge” is already finalized, and construction permits will be issued.

“We hope to start as soon as possible because the project is ready. The construction permit is will be issued. It is important to begin, and I believe that at the pace Romanian construction companies have adopted, things will proceed well. Currently, we are working on issuing the construction permit and the urban planning certificate, followed by the construction permit for the segment on the Republic of Moldova’s side. I believe we will move quickly toward interconnecting the Republic of Moldova,” added the minister.
Vladimir Bolea highlighted that until 2021, there was no discussion about building new bridges. Now, these projects will achieve significant interconnectivity not only with Romania but also with the European Union.
“I want to stress that, until 2021, there was no talk about bridges. Not even the asphalt on existing bridges was replaced. Now, we are discussing construction, most exactly the interconnection of the Republic of Moldova. When we talk about building bridges over the Prut, it holds a dual significance. First, we are connecting with the EU, and second, with Romania. These are two real, authentic actions, not just metaphorical ones. It is in the interest of Romanians everywhere, especially of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, who through these bridges can visit, work, and carry out their activities.”
