Non-compliant landfills and several smaller unauthorized landfills will be liquidated under a project funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Also, a regional sanitary waste repository is to be built, in accordance with EU standards. The agreement worth 25 million euros was signed on Wednesday in Chisinau, reports IPN.
The EBRD investment will support improvements in the solid waste management system in three waste management areas within the Solid Waste Management Strategy of Moldova.
The first Waste Management Zone that will benefit from EBRD support within the project includes Ungheni, Nisporeni, and Călăraşi districts, requiring an estimated investment of around 19.48 million euros. This will be financed by the first installment of 6.94 million euros from the EBRD loan, with a similar amount provided by the EIB.
The Eastern European Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership, to which the European Union is the largest donor, will also provide an investment grant of up to €5.6 million for its rehabilitation. The project is also supported by technical cooperation, financed by Sweden.

The project allows for the expansion, regionalization, and creation of a consolidated regional solid waste management system in the participating areas. The project is expected to serve as a model for a sustainable solid waste management system across the country.
