In the pursuit of enhancing infrastructure, energy efficiency, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises, the European Investment Bank (EIB) continues to invest significantly in Moldova. The fruitful collaboration between EIB and the authorities in Chisinau has resulted in the EIB’s portfolio in Moldova reaching €1.1 billion this year, according to IPN.

The head of EIB’s Representation in Moldova highlighted the growing demand from the authorities for infrastructure project financing. The main areas where EIB funds are allocated are the modernization of transportation units and road infrastructure.

“When comparing our current activities to those of 2021, our portfolio has grown from €800 million to €1.1 billion. This substantial increase serves as the best evidence that our government partners value our relationship. Two-thirds of our activities involve loans for public sector infrastructure, with a significant portion dedicated to the transportation sector. We support road rehabilitation projects, with several million euros allocated to this field. Additionally, we contribute to the improvement of the railway sector and the expansion of the local trolleybus fleet. All these endeavors contribute to the country’s development and enhance the lives of its citizens,” stated Alberto Carlei during the “Obiectiv Comun” TV show on TVR Moldova.

EIB also plays a role in enhancing the energy efficiency of public buildings, including hospitals, schools, kindergartens, and other institutions throughout Moldova.

“We are coordinating a crucial energy efficiency initiative that covers the entire country. EIB finances this project and mobilizes a substantial amount of investment from the European Union. In the initial phase, we will focus on rehabilitating nine hospitals in Moldova to improve energy efficiency. Thermal insulation, energy-efficient lighting, better ventilation, and where possible, the installation of photovoltaic panels on rooftops will be ensured. Undoubtedly, these investments will result in energy savings, benefiting the state budget. We will continue to support Moldova’s efforts in energy efficiency,” added the head of EIB’s Representation in Moldova.

EIB has been active in Moldova since 2007, having invested over €1 billion to date in numerous projects spanning transportation, energy, small and medium-sized enterprises, agriculture, and municipal infrastructure (including solid waste, water, and sanitation).
