The possibility of adopting postal voting in the upcoming presidential elections at the end of the year was mentioned by the head of state, Maia Sandu, during a “Jurnal TV” programme.
The President said, she does not see a problem in changing the Electoral Code in this regard, even though it is an election year. This change may currently only be implemented in a limited number of countries.
“Postal voting should be considered, especially in countries with a larger area where reaching polling stations is difficult. These are things that the Government must now do with the Parliament, and I understand that this discussion has been going on for some time,” says Maia Sandu.
The head of state noted that the postal vote could potentially increase the number of votes in favour of Moldova’s accession to the European Union referendum.
“I believe that the referendum on Moldova’s accession to the European Union unites us all. It is a necessary and logical step to reconfirm the choice of Moldovan, citizens and to rebuild a peaceful and prosperous lasting future. Joining the EU is something that will benefit everyone. Everyone wants peace. It’s a project that unites us all. The accession of the Republic of Moldova to the EU is a crucial decision for the country. It’s important that a large number of people participate in this election to ensure a representative outcome. That’s why the idea of holding elections on the same day as the referendum came up, and that’s why we should try to achieve this with postal voting,” the President said.
