Maia Sandu’s speech at the Congress of the European People’s Party: What is happening in Ukraine will determine Moldova’s future for decades to come

Moldovan President Maia Sandu made a statement at the European People’s Party congress. She emphasised the importance of supporting Ukraine, noting that the future development of democratic Europe depends on the fate of this country. In addition, the president said that Moldova’s future development for decades to come depends on the outcome of the war in Ukraine.

“Dear colleagues, ladies and gentlemen,

I extend my heartfelt gratitude for the privilege to address this esteemed assembly of the European People’s Party (EPP). I am deeply grateful to the National Liberal Party and EPP President, Mr. Manfred Weber, for graciously hosting us today.

We convene at a pivotal juncture.

The fundamental principles of freedom and liberal democracy across Europe face a grave threat. The unwarranted and predatory aggression of Russia against Ukraine seeks to revive outdated geopolitical tactics on the international stage.

We stand united in our conviction that a community of democratic nations, cherishing individual freedoms, human rights, fair elections, and an open society, forms the bedrock for a more just, peaceful, and prosperous world.

Now, more than ever, we require courage, leadership, and a unified purpose to safeguard free societies and repel aggression.

History has taught us that aggression does not dissipate when ignored. Left unchecked, it resurfaces with greater brutality and darker intentions. Now is not the time for self-interest; it is a time for generosity and idealism. Now is the time to defend our shared values of democracy, freedom of choice, and peace.

Ladies and gentlemen,

The security of Europe is imperiled by the situation in Ukraine. There is no room for hesitation—we must rally in support of Ukraine on behalf of all free European nations. The most pressing task before us is to bolster Ukraine and secure peace.

Moldova lies adjacent to Ukraine, and the fate of Ukraine will shape Moldova’s trajectory for decades to come. Russia seeks to expand its sphere of influence into Moldova, disregarding human rights, freedom of expression, assembly, and free elections.

Russia contends that smaller countries like ours have no voice in their geopolitical designs. To Russia, the people of Moldova are mere lines on a map.

Yet, the people of Moldova have chosen a different path. Moldova refuses to be relegated to Russia’s sphere of influence against its will. It is our unequivocal decision to live freely, in democracy, devoid of oppression or fear. Today, more than ever, we implore your steadfast and unwavering support for this decision.

Dear friends of the EPP,

The EPP has consistently been Moldova’s strongest, most committed, and reliable advocate for European integration. You stood by us in our past struggles against oligarchy, state capture, and corruption. Now, in the face of aggression, we rely on your support as we pursue EU accession. I extend my sincere appreciation to Mrs. Ursula von der Leyen, Roberta Metsola, and all our friends here for their guidance and support.

Dear friends of the EPP,

It is precisely in times of crisis that our shared responsibility and leadership are paramount. Together, we will confront this challenge. Together, we will build a larger and stronger union. Together, we stand united,” Maia Sandu said.
