Orlovka Station Hit by Drones: Gas Supply Intact, Power Line at Risk, Experts Warn

A Russian drone strike recently damaged the gas compression station in Orlovka, located in the Odesa region. Despite this incident, energy experts in Chisinau confirmed that Moldova’s gas supply remains unaffected and poses no immediate threat. Experts warned that nearby critical infrastructure remains exposed to continued attacks in the region, particularly the high-voltage line used for importing electricity from Romania. They stressed that any damage to this line could seriously jeopardize Moldova’s energy security.

“In the first place, we must clarify that Moldova’s gas supply will not stop because of this incident. We have alternative routes to import gas, especially now in summer when consumption is low,” energy expert Eugen Muravschi told IPN.

Experts highlighted that damage to the high-voltage line near Orlovka, used for importing electricity from Romania, could become a significant threat. Without a viable alternative, any disruption would jeopardize Moldova’s energy security.

Muravschi also emphasized the broader risks. “There’s a very high risk that Russian bombardments could hit that line. It wouldn’t be the first time Russia used energy as a tool of blackmail—especially ahead of elections,” the expert explained.

Former Energy Minister Victor Parlicov reinforced the importance of the Orlovka station for delivering gas to the left bank of the Dniester River. ”During summer, we easily cover all needs on the right bank through the Iasi–Ungheni pipeline. But we cannot ensure the same for the Transnistrian region, especially for MGRES,” Parlicov told IPN.

He stated that Transnistria is in a fragile position. “That means authorities there will likely take steps to limit any gas flow from the trans-Balkan pipeline to preserve the ability to generate electricity at MGRES,” Parlicov added.

In his view, Russia’s repeated strikes—including those in November 2024 and January 2025—reveal a shift in its attitude toward the Transnistrian region. “It’s a clear signal that Transnistria no longer matters to Russia. They disregard the people living there, even those holding Russian citizenship,” Parlicov said.

A kamikaze drone attack launched by Russian forces last night damaged the gas compression station in the village of Orlovka, Ismail district, Odesa region. The strike triggered a fire and cut off gas supply to 2,500 consumers. Local authorities stated that the attack caused substantial material damage but did not result in any casualties.
