Russian Foreign Ministry calls Moldova’s decision to expel diplomat ‘unfriendly step’

The Russian Foreign Ministry has reacted to the Moldovan Foreign Ministry’s decision to declare “persona nоn grata” an employee of the Russian embassy in Moldova, saying it regards “this unfriendly step as another manifestation of the aggressive anti-Russian course of the current Moldovan leadership.”

“On August 1, the Moldovan authorities declared an employee of the Russian embassy in Chisinau a “persona nоn grata” without any clear justification. We regard this unfriendly step as another manifestation of the aggressive anti-Russian course of the current Moldovan leadership, which irresponsibly destroys Russian-Moldovan ties that have deep historical roots,” the commentary of the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

The employee of the Embassy of the Russian Federation, who allegedly recruited the employee of the Parliament and the Border Police, accused of treason, will be declared persona non grata. The official is to leave the territory of the Republic of Moldova in the coming days. Russian ambassador Oleg Vasnetsov was informed of this and summoned to the Foreign Ministry in Chisinau on Thursday, August 1.

The Moldovan Foreign Ministry has also reacted, confirming that an employee of the Russian Embassy has been declared persona non grata.

“The decision of the Moldovan authorities was taken as a result of specific activities undertaken, as a result of which information and evidence we obtained that the Russian diplomat was carrying out on the territory of the Republic of Moldova activities incompatible with diplomatic status.

In this context, the employee of the Russian Embassy is to leave the Republic of Moldova.”
