Speaker Igor Grosu: Referendum on Moldova’s accession to EU to define our present and future for the next decades

The referendum on Moldova’s accession to the European Union will have a profound impact on the country’s future for the next decades. It is a project that will define our generation. Igor Grosu, the Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament, made this statement after the Constitutional Court today approved the draft law amending the Constitution, which provides for holding a referendum on EU accession.

The speaker stressed that in the referendum citizens will be able to tell the whole world that they are Europeans and want to be part of the European family.

“On 20 October, on the same day, we will have presidential elections and the referendum on EU accession. On 20 October we will be asked whether – “Are you in favour of Moldova joining the European Union?”. After more than 30 years, the time has finally come for us – the citizens – to tell the whole world that we are Europeans and that we want to be part of the European family. The referendum on Moldova’s accession to the European Union will define our present and future for the next decades, it is the project of our generation,” he said.

The Constitutional Court today approved the draft law amending the Constitution, which provides for the holding of a referendum on the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union and the inclusion of the desire in the Constitution.

The referendum on Moldova’s accession to the European Union was initiated by President Maia Sandu and is scheduled to be held on 20 October, the same day as the presidential elections.
