The country’s leadership welcomes the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA). According to President Maia Sandu, this represents a step that confirms the alignment of our financial banking sector with European standards. The head of state also says that this achievement brings concrete benefits to citizens, ensuring access to faster, safer, and cheaper transactions with the European Union. Thus, the citizens of the Republic of Moldova will be able to benefit from this new provision starting this fall.
“This decision means that transfers to EU countries and from EU countries to Moldova will be cheaper and faster. Today, fees can reach tens and hundreds of euros. Once the Republic of Moldova joins the single euro payments area, these transfers will only cost a few euros and will be simplified,” said the president.
The President of Parliament also posted a message on social media. Igor Grosu mentioned that Brussels made a historic decision.
“This step will ensure that Moldovan citizens and companies have access to a faster, safer payment system at very low or no costs. At the same time, it will help reduce the costs of money transfers made by Moldovans from the diaspora, an essential aspect for many families in Moldova,” wrote Igor Grosu.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean also welcomed the decision. The official wrote: “This is good news for all citizens from the diaspora who send money to their families in the country, as well as for entrepreneurs.”
“I am confident that banks will quickly adapt to this system so that in a few months, we can benefit from all the opportunities that SEPA offers. With this step, Moldova becomes closer to the European Union and its economic opportunities,” concluded the prime minister.
On Wednesday, March 6, 2025, the National Bank of Moldova (BNM) announced that the Republic of Moldova joined the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA). The decision, according to the institution, reflects confirmation of significant progress in Moldova’s EU integration process. SEPA membership will facilitate faster, safer, and more accessible international payments in euros for the citizens and business environment in Moldova.
Moldova’s accession to SEPA will make a real difference in the lives of families receiving money from the diaspora. More money will remain in the pockets of Moldovans as high fees for international transfers will become a thing of the past.
For Moldovans working in the EU and sending money home, SEPA means faster, cheaper, and more efficient transfers. They will no longer have to pay excessive fees to help their families. For example, today, an international euro transfer for Moldovans costs between 20 and 200 euros, but after joining SEPA, the same transfer could cost only 1-2 euros or even 50 cents.
