The EU Ambassador in Chisinau: “The green economy is the future of the Republic of Moldova”

With the Republic of Moldova obtaining the status of a candidate country for the European Union, the environmental problems, which have been neglected until now, will have to be approached more seriously, European authorities and officials claim. The head of the EU Delegation in Chisinau, Jānis Mažeiks, noted the importance of the transition to the green economy and that this represents our future.

According to Europa Liberă, at a round table in Chisinau, with the title “Economie Verde – Fabricat in Moldova” (Green Economy – Made in Moldova), the vice-president of the relevant parliamentary committee, Ina Coșeru, said that the environmental objectives should not remain only on paper, but should be implemented.

The deputy mentioned two laws adopted in accordance with the Moldova-EU Association Agreement, one on atmospheric air quality and another on the reduction of industrial emissions, which “are very complex, they come with new instruments, but they will change the face of R. Moldova”.

She also urged economic agents to submit projects to obtain funding under the European Union’s program for environment and climate policies (LIFE), for example, for waste and wastewater management or for the use of green technologies in the production process.

“We have to have good ideas to be competitive,” said Coșeru.

The Minister of the Environment, Iordanca-Rodica Iordanov, spoke about the programs to be adopted by the middle of this year. It is about the green energy promotion program, where the steps to be taken to make the transition to the green economy will be described, and the climate change adaptation promotion program, focused on six components: agriculture, forestry, transport, energy, health, and water.

“As a candidate country for the European family, you will have to comply with the requirements included in the European Green Pact, you must ensure the harmonization of the legislation of the Republic of Moldova with the Community acquis. It is very important that the laws are applied and we understand that they are not adopted just for the tick, but for the well-being and health of the population, for the future of the Republic of Moldova”, said the EU ambassador.

Discussions also focused on the green labeling process. By the end of the year, a regulation on this will be adopted, as well as the eco-label. The green economy represents economic activity based on the concept of sustainable development, the use of renewable natural resources, and environmental protection.
