The European Council supports Moldova’s EU accession and condemns Russia’s attempts to undermine the elections

The European Council supports Moldova’s commitment to join the European Union. The EU Council made this decision following the community summit held on October 17.

European officials welcome reform processes and actions to strengthen resilience and stability. At the same time, they condemn Russian interference in Moldova’s electoral process.

“The European Council condemns Russia’s persistent manipulation of foreign intelligence and interference to try to undermine the democratic elections and the Moldovan people’s choice for a prosperous, stable and peaceful European future.

The European Council welcomes the adoption of the third package of sanctions against those responsible for actions aimed at destabilizing, undermining, or threatening the sovereignty and independence of the Republic of Moldova. The European Council reaffirms its firm commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova,” reads the document issued after the Council meeting.

In early October, the European Union added Eugenia Gutsul and several other high-ranking officials from Gagauzia to its sanctions list. The EU leaders have also announced that the restrictive measures also target the “Eurasia” organization created by Ilan Shor.
