The import licensing regime for wheat, corn and sunflower will be extended until June 30, 2025

Moldova will continue requiring licenses for the import of wheat, corn, and sunflower seeds until June 30, 2025. The government approved the extension of the licensing regime.

This regulatory measure aims to protect local farmers and maintain the stability of Moldova’s agricultural market amidst ongoing challenges in the agri-food sector.

The government introduced the licensing mechanism for importing wheat, corn, and sunflower seeds in October 2023 to prevent an oversupply of imports, particularly from Ukraine, where significantly lower prices could have devalued local products.

The mechanism ensured processing companies prioritized local raw materials, enabling farmers to sell at fair prices and protect their income and investments.

As of early December, Moldova’s stocks of these products are sufficient to meet domestic demand in the coming months: wheat – 290,000 tons; corn – 662,000 tons; sunflower seeds – 249,600 tons.
