In a resolution adopted unanimously at its special session on Tuesday, March 15th, the PACE noted that the Russian Federation had committed serious violations, incompatible with the status of a member state of the Council of Europe.
At the same time, the PACE expressed its solidarity with the Ukrainian people and was “deeply disturbed by the evidence of serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law by the Russian Federation, including attacks on civilian targets and humanitarian corridors, indiscriminate use of artillery. The assembly welcomed the generosity and solidarity shown by neighboring countries, which continue to receive hundreds of thousands of refugees.
The PACE resolution also states that “through its attitude and actions, the leadership of the Russian Federation poses an open threat to security in Europe, following a path that also includes the act of military aggression against the Republic of Moldova and the occupation of its Transnistrian region, respectively. , the act of military aggression against Georgia and the subsequent occupation of its two regions in 2008, the illegal annexation of Crimea and its role in eastern Ukraine, which culminated in the illegal recognition of the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Luhansk as “independent states”. it also says in the resolution of the Assembly.
Also on Tuesday, before the vote on the PACE resolution, Russia announced that it wants to withdraw from the Council of Europe. A letter to this effect was allegedly sent by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
