The PACE: Transnistria – a Zone of Russian Occupation

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe resolution contains an amendment stating, “Russia’s (military) aggression against the Republic of Moldova and the occupation of the Transnistrian region.” The PACE also demanded the exclusion of the Russian Federation from the Council of Europe, condemning the military invasion of Ukraine, according to disinfo.md.

In a resolution adopted unanimously at its special session on Tuesday, March 15th, the PACE noted that the Russian Federation had committed serious violations, incompatible with the status of a member state of the Council of Europe.

At the same time, the PACE expressed its solidarity with the Ukrainian people and was “deeply disturbed by the evidence of serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law by the Russian Federation, including attacks on civilian targets and humanitarian corridors, indiscriminate use of artillery. Also on Tuesday, before the vote on the PACE resolution, Russia announced that it wants to withdraw from the Council of Europe. A letter to this effect was allegedly sent by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
