What is Hungary’s position on granting Moldova EU candidate status?

Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița had a telephone conversation with her Hungarian counterpart, Victor Orban. The discussion focused primarily on strengthening the European integration process of the Republic of Moldova, developing bilateral economic relations and attracting new investments. Thus, Gavrilița requested the support of Hungary in this endeavor. Victor Orban confirmed that Hungary has been a supporter of the Republic of Moldova on the path of European integration over the years and will give our country all the support in obtaining the candidate status.

“The Republic of Moldova needs a boost, a strategic goal. And obtaining the status of candidate country would mobilize the whole society around this national idea. We know that a long process is coming and we are ready to do our homework as required “, said Natalia GavriliČ›a.

The Prime Minister welcomed the resumption of the Chisinau – Budapest flights of the Hungarian company, following the involvement of the two governments. At the same time, officials appreciated the increase in the volume of trade between the two countries and the increase in Hungarian investment in the Republic of Moldova.

The two also discussed the application for membership of the European Union, recently submitted by the Republic of Moldova, and obtaining the status of candidate country at the end of June, at the European Council. Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilița said that, at this moment, European integration is a major concern for the Cabinet she leads and, moreover, it has become a national desideratum.
