In a recent development that further strains bilateral relations, Russia has responded vehemently to the decision made by the Republic of Moldova to reduce the number of Russian embassy employees. This move is seen as another step taken by Chișinău towards undermining the diplomatic ties between the two nations. The announcement was made by Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a press briefing.
Zakharova stated, “We consider these actions to be unjustified and unfriendly, and they will not go unanswered. This is a new step towards destroying bilateral relations by the regime in Chișinău,” as reported by TASS. She further commented on the corresponding action taken by Moldova, adding, “As for the so-called investigation that includes baseless accusations against the Russian Embassy in Chișinău and its personnel of espionage activities – this is a kind of opposite, a fantastical narrative that has nothing to do with reality. Our diplomats and diplomatic missions in the Republic of Moldova strictly adhere to the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.”

It should be recalled that today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu, announced the decision of the Moldovan Government to reduce the number of diplomatic staff accredited to the Russian Embassy in Chișinău. This decision came after a journalistic investigation into alleged espionage systems installed on the roof of the Russian embassy.
The decision by Moldova has added to the existing tensions between the two countries, especially in the aftermath of the ongoing war in neighboring Ukraine. The reduction in embassy staff is seen as a significant measure taken by Chișinău, signaling its concerns and displeasure over the espionage allegations.
