The process of absorption of Marculesti International Airport by Chisinau International Airport will start in February. The action will start once the Public Property Agency has drafted the package of decision acts and their approval by the Government. The first civilian commercial flights from Marculesti Airport are expected by the end of this year, IPN reports.
The APP says the aim is to create a modern and efficient airport system capable of meeting the needs of passengers and withstanding market fluctuations at critical times. This involves the functional and administrative integration of both airports in order to expand the operational capacity of the new entity.
Chisinau International Airport, being until now also the country’s main air station, recorded a significant financial profit in 2024, at more than 4 million passengers served, reaching historical performance levels.
From this record profit, the JPA recommends that direct investments be injected into the development of both terminals, primarily for the expansion and modernization of the passenger terminal at Chisinau Airport, and subsequently for the rehabilitation of the infrastructure at Marculești. Forecasts for 2025, based on these investments, estimate an increase in passenger flow to 5 million.

Work to expand the Chisinau terminal will start in March and be completed in August. They will include the expansion of the arrivals hall to handle a larger passenger flow, the modernization of the baggage sorting and processing system to optimize waiting time, and the expansion of the departure hall by introducing advanced digital solutions such as self-check-in and modern passport control technologies, APP says.
At Marculesti International Airport, works will be carried out to rehabilitate the runway and adapt the terminal for summer charter flights. These investments will position Marculesti as an important hub for air transport and cargo services in the region.
The project is coordinated by the Public Property Agency with the strategic support of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development.
