Illicit work – still a problem in Moldova!? See the statistics

The number of unemployed in the fourth quarter of 2022 was 41.2 thousand, higher than the level of the fourth quarter of 2021 (22.9 thousand). Unemployment affected men to a greater extent, who made up 59.0% of the total unemployed and people from rural areas – 57.8%, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, according to Bani.md.

The unemployment rate at the country level registered a value of 4.6%, higher than 2.6% in 2021. The unemployment rate for men was 5.2%, and for women – 3.9%; in urban areas – 4.2%, and in rural areas – 4.9%.

At the same time, 16.6% of the total number of people employed in the economy had an illicit job – they receive their salary in an envelope or “under the table” (in the fourth quarter of 2021, the same, 16.6%). The share of people who had an undeclared job constituted 22.3% of the total number of employed people (in the fourth quarter of 2021 – 23.0%).

In the non-agricultural sector, illicit employment constituted 12.2% (in the fourth quarter of 2021 – 12.0%). The largest share of people employed informally in non-agricultural activities is recorded in construction (67.2% of the total number of people employed in construction). Out of the number of people employed unofficially, employees made up 24.8%.

Out of the total number of employees, 6.9% had an undeclared job, and at the same time they received the salary “in their paws”.

The employed population was 862.4 thousand people at the end of 2022, 1.8% more than in 2021.
