President Sandu Takes a Stand: 5+2 Format for Transnistrian Conflict Fails to Deliver

The 5+2 format for resolving the Transnistrian conflict is no longer functional, and President Maia Sandu does not see how it can become functional, she declared in an interview with Vocea Basarabiei television station.

“For us, there is only one way to solve the Transnistrian conflict, and that is through peaceful means. This format (referring to the 5+2 format) is not functional, and considering what is happening, I don’t see how it could be functional… It is not Russia’s business what happens in the Republic of Moldova. I don’t want to go into details about how we should solve the conflict, but the Russian army must withdraw from there,” stated Sandu.

During the interview, Sandu also emphasized that the Republic of Moldova no longer humbles itself before the Kremlin and will not allow itself to be ridiculed.

“Moscow continues to show a lack of respect towards the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, but the government in Chișinău, which represents the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, no longer humbles itself as it did in the past before the Kremlin. Instead, it defends the interests of the citizens and speaks plainly. When we see disrespect from Moscow, we speak up about it. When we see attempts to destabilize the situation in the Republic of Moldova, we have spoken out loud and clear, without hiding the details as previous governments have done,” Sandu further added.

The 5+2 format is a diplomatic negotiation platform aimed at finding a solution to the Transnistrian conflict between Moldova and Transnistria. The “5+2” format includes Moldova and Transnistria as parties, with OSCE, Russia, and Ukraine as mediators, and the European Union and the United States as observers.
