Veaceslav Ioniță: The foreign debt of the Republic of Moldova reached over 9.4 billion dollars last year

The foreign debt of the Republic of Moldova reached over 9.4 billion dollars last year. According to the preliminary data of the National Bank of Moldova, during 2022 it increased by 8 percent. Of this amount, only three billion dollars is the debt of the Government, the National Bank of Moldova, local public administrations and state-owned enterprises, and the rest is the debt of the private companies, said economic expert Veaceaslav Ioniță.

In 2022, the external debt of the Republic of Moldova exceeded 9 billion dollars, of this amount, approximately 3.2 billion is the debt of the Government, the National Bank of Moldova, local public administrations and state enterprises.In the last year, it only increased by 700 million dollars, which is a positive phenomenon.

This year, the Government will have to pay, only in the form of interest, about 3 billion lei for the internal debt. In order to reduce budget expenses, in 2022, for the first time, the Government did not borrow at all. It did not increase internal debts, but emphasized to the external credits”, Ioniță said.

At the same time, according to the economic expert, most of the external debt of our country is of the private companies. Thus, the debt is not directly related to citizens, but to companies that have borrowed externally.
