Traian Basescu: “Putin can occupy Transnistria, but he will not be able to keep it”

Former Romanian President Traian Basescu believes that Putin can occupy Transnistria overnight but cannot control this region even for three days, digi24.ro has reported.

The former Romanian president also said that Ukraine would not tolerate a massive military presence in Transnistria.

“Putin can occupy Transnistria overnight. He will land an infantry brigade in Transnistria and occupy it. The maximum width in the region is 27 kilometres, but he will not be able to hold it. Ukraine will not tolerate a massive military presence in Transnistria. The same thing will happen with this region as with Snake Island,” Basescu said.

He also said that Russia cannot continue occupying Transnistria because “Ukraine will destroy everything it can there.”

“Russia has not conquered Odessa. It cannot conquer Transnistria. She can occupy it, but she cannot hold it,” the former Romanian president explained.

The politician also clarified the situation in the Black Sea.

“I have seen an optimist who believes Russia has lost control of the Black Sea. This person has no idea what he is talking about. Russia has submarines in the Black Sea. No one knows how many of them there are. No one knows what military capabilities they have. Russia should be seen as a force that dominates the Black Sea until NATO – especially together with Turkey, Greece, Romania and Bulgaria – gains enough strength in the Black Sea to dominate the shipping lines,” Traian Basescu said.
