Moldova wants a free trade agreement with Egypt. Popescu signed several bilateral documents in Cairo

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Nicu Popescu, met in Cairo with his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry. According to the vice-premier, Moldova and Egypt will intensify bilateral cooperation for the benefit of the citizens of both states. In this way, facilitating the dialogue both at the governmental level and at the level of the business environment.

A special topic of interest was the launch of discussions with a view to signing the Free Trade Agreement between our countries, a process that will substantially contribute to the consolidation of commercial-economic relations between Moldova and Egypt.

From the perspective of trade cooperation, we agreed to take advantage of economic opportunities of mutual interest, especially in the fields of agriculture, pharmaceuticals, energy, tourism and infrastructure.

“A concrete step in this regard was the organization of the Egypt-Moldova economic forum, in which I participated together with the Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, Vladimir Bolea, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Economy, Vadim Gumene and the director general of the National Food Safety Agency, Radu Musteata.

We discussed the latest security developments following Russia’s war against Ukraine, as well as the global food crisis caused by it, reiterating the position of the Republic of Moldova condemning the Russian aggression against the neighboring country”, said Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu.

The visit to Cairo led to the signing of several bilateral documents:

  • The Memorandum of Understanding regarding the establishment of a political consultation mechanism between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt;
  • Intergovernmental Agreement on Reciprocal Visa Waiver for Holders of Diplomatic, Service and Special Passports;
  • Memorandum of Understanding between the Diplomatic Institute of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration and the Institute of Diplomatic Studies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt;

The visit to Cairo is part of the context of marking 30 years since the establishment of Moldovan-Egyptian bilateral relations, being the first visit of a foreign minister of the Republic of Moldova to the Arab Republic of Egypt.
